Barcapel Equity was established to provide international and UK investors with a professional investment opportunity into companies likely to have received seed funding, now demonstrating traction and having the basis of a strong management team which – with the right blend of skills, equity and debt – provide excellent return prospects. Barcapel Equity provides equity funding across opportunities in science and technology. We invest into and proactively support scale-up and development of ambitious companies with strong growth potential. Our focus is on UK registered companies that have an opportunity to internationalise rapidly and that are preparing for that expansion. We look to maximise our fund performance through taking a close supporting role with each investee company. Our highly experienced global team and our extensive resource portfolio ensure we have access to the skills required to fill gaps identified within our investee companies.

Key Executives
Chairman & Senior Partner
Athol has built companies across several sectors from the ground up and worked as a consultant to several others. He has experience of successful exits by trade sale and management buy- out. Alongside senior roles in technology and life sciences, over the past decade, he has built up a portfolio of family office investments valued at several £M in sectors as diverse as creative, defence, recruitment and software apps. Athol’s investee companies have raised over £35M in equity and non-diluted funding in UK, GCC and Asian markets. With many speaking credits and awards, Athol has a level of senior experience which is invaluable when identifying, assessing and managing businesses to successful liquidity events.
Managing Partner
Stuart has worked with companies across several sectors, firstly through his career in commercial and corporate banking and more recently through his involvement as a partner in an early-stage company investment fund. He has been closely involved with renewable energy investments – particularly hydro, onshore wind, solar and biogas. Stuart has an extensive business network which delivers a flow of quality investment opportunities. He has a deep understanding of issues facing start-up and early-stage businesses, acting as a NED and mentor to several. He has significant business experience covering business growth, takeovers, management buy-outs and buy-ins. Stuart is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and holds a MA(Hons) in Geography from the University of Edinburgh.
Head of Portfolio Management
Currently residing in Abu Dhabi, John began his career on the Interest Rates Swaps desk in the early 90’s. Spending the subsequent 20 years working for large blue-chip Asset Managers including Aberdeen Asset Management, RBS Asset Management and Henderson Global Advisors, John’s experience extends to long only and alternative investment asset classes. More recently, John ran three different funds and outperformed his peer group in 8 of 10 years. Each fund incorporated equities, bonds, currency, investing in other hedge funds, long only funds and emerging technology private equity. John holds an MA in Economics and Politics and an MSc in Investment Analysis both from the University of Stirling and he is an associate member of the CFA (UK), an Associate of the Society of Investment Professionals and a graduate of the INSEAD Leadership Development Programme.
Chief Financial Officer
Fraser is a commercially aware Chartered Accountant with significant experience gained in financial and general management roles following his training and qualifying with Touche Ross (now Deloitte) over 30 years ago. His career developed with his keen knowledge and instinct for the financial management of business with Board appointments in a variety of sectors including hospitality, mining and retail. Latterly he was appointed Chief Executive of Hamilton and Kinneil Estates in 2002. During this time, he was responsible for all commercial interests of the Duke of Hamilton and His Family including the diversification of Estate activities. The diversification included investing in start-up companies; he set up and coordinated a Business Angel syndicate that successfully invested in a number of companies, leading to him serving on various boards as Investor Director on behalf of his fellow investors. He is non-Executive Director of several companies covering a broad range of industries which continue to enhance his knowledge and experience and participates in an Angel syndicate, Apollo Investors. As a Director of No.9 Corporate Advisers he offers strategic planning, financial and overall commercial management services to developing businesses or those requiring turnaround experience.

After studying a BSc in Agriculture at Aberdeen and a MSc in Economics at the University of London, Martin was Operations Director of a coffee trading and processing business in Kinshasa (DRC) before setting up a successful pizza manufacturing company, Uin Foods Limited.
Now Managing Director of the Castle View Group since 2000 Martin re-structured, grew and drove the Group forward. He successfully moved direction from the catering sector into leisure, paid down debt and built a profitable trading Group set to break £250 m turnover with a £15m net profit this year with over 8000 employees.
Martin has been involved a non-executive role within the SWP Group plc since 2008 and took this off Aim in 2017 as well as undertaking a new role as Chairman of Novosound and being involved in various similar activities such as an Angel Investor.
Martin’s hobbies include golf, tennis, music and languages.
Corporate Governance, Experienced Early Stage Investor
Frank has worked in the UK financial services industry for 30+ years. He is now a non-executive director on the boards of several companies in different organisations, including the parent companies of a privately owned multi-national group. He also works with a couple of charities. He is a seasoned and successful early stage investor, with current investments in several companies (involved in Financial Services, Medical devices and Consumer Electronics) in the both the UK and US. He has a wealth of practical experience.
Project Management, Business Systems Analysis, Sovereign Wealth
Joanna has 14 years of work experience in Information Technology within both the Telecoms and Financial Sectors. Having completed a MSc in Economics in Szczecin, and a MSc. in Business Systems Analysis and Design at the University of London, her focus has been in managing software development and delivery, as well as talent development. Currently Joanna works in Portfolio and Project Management function for a Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Operations, Sales Growth
Richard is a highly experienced operations professional with a career that includes Howden Group, Hyster, Rolls Royce and General Electric. He was a co-founder of Cascade Technologies which was sold to Emerson Electric for a substantial sum, allowing him to spread his experience into helping develop younger companies within the medical devices, gas analysis and ultrasound technology industries. Richard is currently CEO of an ultrasound company with global ambition and NED to several other companies with angel syndicate backing. Richard has an honours degree in Production Engineering and Management from the University of Strathclyde, a post graduate qualification in Process Plant from the University of the West of Scotland and has been a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) since 1982.

Based in Scotland, Adrian is an experienced large family business owner and CEO. He built Scotch Frost of Glasgow Ltd - a multi-site food distribution business - to a turnover of circa £60m and led its substantial sale to a Japanese Food Co-Operative. Since exiting, Adrian acts as a NED/Chairman across the UK private sector and is currently Chair of the YPO Scotland Chapter, a significant, global chief executive leadership organisation and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Adrian has a deep understanding of managing currency and currency hedging products, banking instruments and the shipping processes for import/export of food products.
Specialist Consulting, Clinical Research (Oncology)
Karen is a globally recognised expert in her field of oncology research and clinical trials. As founder and CEO of Glasgow, Delaware and Dublin headquartered Karma Oncology, Karen utilises decades of experience with Boehringer Mannheim, Novartis and Pfizer to provide niche clinical development services. Karen adds an in-depth understanding of the global life sciences marketplace which is an invaluable resource when assessing science-based opportunities. She holds an honours degree in Biology and a PhD in bioengineering, both from the University of Strathclyde. Karen can also boast a series of professional qualifications demonstrating her suitability as an expert in field of life sciences.
